In case you are interested in doing a similar workshop, we wanted to share our planning process and materials. We will be updating this as we go, so please check back if you're interested.
We are geographically dispersed, and we meet over Skype and have a shared folder on Google drive where we keep our meeting minutes and other documents.
One of our members put the website together - just a front page and the application form. You are welcome to borrow language from either. All we ask is if you are organizing your own critical librarianship workshop, you create your own look and feel to your site so that people can distinguish between us. If you wanted to link out to us or mention our workshop, that’s fine too.
In terms of hosting the workshop, we approached a faculty member at the iSchool here in Toronto and asked if he could help us by booking a room or two and if the iSchool wanted to be formally involved as a sponsor. He said yes. All you really need though is a couple of classrooms and enough registration money to cover food and drink for two days.
Money: we haven’t figured out how we will collect the money or what the exact fee will be yet, but we’re aiming for no more than $100 per participant and that is mainly to cover food and equipment.. We do not want to make any profit, or lose any money. If by some miracle or mistake we make any profit, we will use it for next year’s event.
Marketing: we just advertised on listservs and social media. We have a list of listservs - if you want to use it, just email one of us and we’ll send it to you.
As for the orchestrating of the two day intensive itself - how the conversation will be facilitated, structured and so forth - that is still to be determined. Watch this space.
